usb: typec: tipd: fix uninitialized typec_partner_desc in cd321x_update_work()

Published 2026-10-18 (today) by the Linux kernel CNA. Subsystem drivers/usb. Debian urgency: unimportant.

Debian does not build this code. The per-release build detail is under "Where it lives" below.

The vulnerability

What the bug is

cd321x_update_work() passes a stack-allocated typec_partner_desc to typec_register_partner() after initializing only usb_pd, accessory and identity. typec_register_partner() copies attach and deattach from the descriptor into the partner. With those fields left unset, garbage function pointers may be stored and later invoked from typec_partner_link_device() when a USB device is linked to the port. Uninitialized pd_revision and usb_capability similarly leak stack data through partner sysfs. Zero-initialize the descriptor so optional callbacks remain NULL and the remaining fields are zero.

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

none to look for. The file would have gone into tps6598x, and Debian does not compile it into that module, so finding tps6598x in lsmod would say nothing about this CVE.

Check it on the machine

grep -wE 'CONFIG_OF|CONFIG_PCI|CONFIG_TYPEC|CONFIG_TYPEC_TPS6598X|CONFIG_USB|CONFIG_USB_GADGET|CONFIG_USB_PHY|CONFIG_USB_SUPPORT' /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

Show whether Debian builds this, per release

Debian does not build this code. In 4 releases below, every kernel flavour Debian publishes has the switch off, so the vulnerable file is compiled into no kernel binary Debian ships.

Why the CNA scored it this way

The kernel CNA published no CVSS vector and no reasoning for CVE-2026-98759, which is why it is shown as unrated rather than given an invented score. 6,405 of the 20,413 CVEs here carry reasoning; this is not one of them.
