The vulnerability

What the bug is

The erase size is parsed from the "block2mtd" module parameter and can be set to zero. add_device() then evaluates if (size % erase_size) with a zero divisor, which triggers a divide error: divide error: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP PTI RIP: 0010:add_device drivers/mtd/devices/block2mtd.c:296 [inline] RIP: 0010:block2mtd_setup2+0x592/0xda0 drivers/mtd/devices/block2mtd.c:459 Call Trace: block2mtd_setup+0x27/0xe0 drivers/mtd/devices/block2mtd.c:476 param_attr_store+0x214/0x310 kernel/params.c:589 module_attr_store+0x65/0x90 kernel/params.c:904 kernfs_fop_write_iter+0x3a4/0x540 fs/kernfs/file.c:345 ... Reject a zero erase size before performing the modulo operation so the existing "erasesize must be a divisor of device size" error path reports the invalid argument and frees the device.

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Kernel module
block2mtd

Check it on the machine

grep -wE 'CONFIG_MTD|CONFIG_MTD_BLOCK2MTD' /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

lsmod | grep -w block2mtd

Prints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.

Show whether Debian builds this, per release

Debian builds this, but not on every flavour. At least one release below builds the code on some of its kernel flavours and not on others, so the answer depends on the architecture and flavour installed.

Why the CNA scored it this way

The kernel CNA published no CVSS vector and no reasoning for CVE-2026-98722, which is why it is shown as unrated rather than given an invented score. 6,405 of the 20,413 CVEs here carry reasoning; this is not one of them.
