net: bcmgenet: stop Tx NAPI before disabling the queues

Published 2026-10-18 (today) by the Linux kernel CNA. Subsystem drivers/net. Debian urgency: unimportant.

The vulnerability

What the bug is

bcmgenet_netif_stop() and the Wake-on-LAN branch of bcmgenet_suspend() both disable the Tx queues first and stop Tx NAPI several steps later. A completion in flight calls netif_tx_wake_queue() in between, and nothing stops the queue again, so a transmit can reach the rings after they have been freed. Close is safe because dev_deactivate_many() stops the qdisc first. bcmgenet_suspend() does not, so stop Tx NAPI before the queues on both paths. KASAN on a Raspberry Pi CM4, driven from an MTU change because suspend freezes user space before the callback runs: BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in bcmgenet_xmit+0x17f8/0x2258 Write of size 8 at addr ffffff8055844a68 by task ksoftirqd/0/14 bcmgenet_xmit+0x17f8/0x2258 dev_hard_start_xmit+0x13c/0x588 sch_direct_xmit+0x108/0x340 __dev_queue_xmit+0x1190/0x3848

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Check it on the machine

grep -wE 'CONFIG_BCMGENET|CONFIG_ETHERNET|CONFIG_NET_VENDOR_BROADCOM' /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

lsmod | grep -w genet

Prints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.

Show whether Debian builds this, per release

Debian builds this, but not on every flavour. At least one release below builds the code on some of its kernel flavours and not on others, so the answer depends on the architecture and flavour installed.

Why the CNA scored it this way

The kernel CNA published no CVSS vector and no reasoning for CVE-2026-98574, which is why it is shown as unrated rather than given an invented score. 6,405 of the 20,413 CVEs here carry reasoning; this is not one of them.
