RISC-V: KVM: Serialize IMSIC attributes with vCPU migration

Published 2026-10-18 (today) by the Linux kernel CNA. Subsystem arch/riscv. Debian urgency: unimportant.

What to do, per Debian release

The vulnerability

What the bug is

KVM device ioctls are not serialized against KVM_RUN. As a result, kvm_riscv_aia_imsic_rw_attr() can snapshot the physical CPU and HGEI of an IMSIC VS-file before a concurrent vCPU migration releases it. The HGEI can then be allocated to another vCPU before imsic_vsfile_rw() uses the stale tuple. A GET or SET attribute may consequently access the new owner's interrupt file. Serialize the entire IMSIC attribute operation with the target vCPU mutex. This prevents the VS-file from being migrated and recycled until the attribute access completes. Acquire the mutex killably so that the device ioctl remains interruptible while waiting for KVM_RUN to finish.

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Kernel module
kvm

Check it on the machine

grep -w CONFIG_KVM /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

lsmod | grep -w kvm

Prints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.

Show whether Debian builds this, per release

Debian builds this, but not on every flavour. At least one release below builds the code on some of its kernel flavours and not on others, so the answer depends on the architecture and flavour installed. The build rule could not be established for 1 release, so nothing is claimed about those.

B
built in on some, a module on others, absent on the rest

Where a release above reads "not established", no build rule for the affected file was found in that release's kernel tree. That is a gap in this lookup, not a finding that the code is absent.

Why the CNA scored it this way

The kernel CNA published no CVSS vector and no reasoning for CVE-2026-98465, which is why it is shown as unrated rather than given an invented score. 6,405 of the 20,413 CVEs here carry reasoning; this is not one of them.
