btrfs: clear free space tree creation state on rebuild failure

EPSS 0.2%

Published 2026-10-06 (13 days ago) by the Linux kernel CNA. Subsystem fs/btrfs. Debian urgency: unimportant.

The vulnerability

What the bug is

btrfs_rebuild_free_space_tree() sets BTRFS_FS_CREATING_FREE_SPACE_TREE before rebuilding the free space tree. Several error paths return without clearing this flag. The transaction restart failure path can leave the flag set on a live filesystem, causing delayed reference processing to be skipped. Clear it on all free space tree rebuild failure paths. Keep BTRFS_FS_FREE_SPACE_TREE_UNTRUSTED set, since a failed rebuild leaves the free space tree untrusted. Callers must fall back to extent-tree caching.

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Kernel module
btrfs

Check it on the machine

grep -w CONFIG_BTRFS_FS /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

lsmod | grep -w btrfs

Prints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.

Show whether Debian builds this, per release

Debian builds this as a loadable module. Every release below compiles it as a module on every flavour, so whether the code is in the running kernel depends on whether that module is loaded.

From the configuration Debian publishes for every kernel flavour it builds. It covers only the architectures Debian ships a linux-config package for, and nothing about a kernel you built yourself. Why the CNA scored it this way

The kernel CNA published no CVSS vector and no reasoning for CVE-2026-98244, which is why it is shown as unrated rather than given an invented score. 6,405 of the 20,413 CVEs here carry reasoning; this is not one of them.
