The vulnerability

What the bug is

dup_task_struct() copies the parent's task_struct, including ret_stack. ftrace_graph_init_task() clears the copied function graph state, but it currently runs after copy_exec_state(). For non-CLONE_VM forks, copy_exec_state() allocates a new task_exec_state. If that allocation fails, copy_process() reaches bad_fork_free and free_task() calls ftrace_graph_exit_task(). Since the child still carries the parent's ret_stack pointer, the unwind frees the parent's active function graph return stack. The parent subsequently accesses freed memory from function_graph_enter_regs(). Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Why the CNA scored it this way

Quoted from the kernel CNA's own scoring file, word for word. A highlighted metric carries the most severe value CVSS v3.1 defines for it, which is what pushes the score up. source

AV:LAttack vector, local
Triggered by a local fork()/clone() without CLONE_VM entering copy_process(): copy_exec_state() -> task_exec_state_copy() fails, and bad_fork_free -> free_task() -> ftrace_graph_exit_task() frees the ret_stack pointer the child inherited from the parent. No remote input is involved.
