s390/crypto: Fix missing scrub of temp buffers with PAES algorithm

EPSS 0.2%

Published 2026-09-25 (24 days ago) by the Linux kernel CNA. Subsystem arch/s390. Debian urgency: unimportant.

The vulnerability

What the bug is

In function ctr_paes_do_crypt() there is a buffer used to process remaining bytes < AES_BLOCK_SIZE. This buffer was not scrubbed and thus could lead to expose of unwanted data. Rework the code to explicitly scrub the buffer at the end of the function to avoid exposure of maybe sensitive data. In function __xts_2keys_prep_param() change the existing scrub to clean the whole param block instead of just the key field.

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

none to look for. The file would have gone into paes_s390, and Debian does not compile it into that module, so finding paes_s390 in lsmod would say nothing about this CVE.

Check it on the machine

grep -w CONFIG_CRYPTO_PAES_S390 /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

Show whether Debian builds this, per release

Debian does not build this code. In 4 releases below, every kernel flavour Debian publishes has the switch off, so the vulnerable file is compiled into no kernel binary Debian ships.

Why the CNA scored it this way

The kernel CNA published no CVSS vector and no reasoning for CVE-2026-97590, which is why it is shown as unrated rather than given an invented score. 6,405 of the 20,413 CVEs here carry reasoning; this is not one of them.
