What the bug is

cifs_setsize() calls truncate_pagecache() but skips pagecache_isize_extended() on extension. truncate_setsize() shows the correct pattern: i_size_write(inode, newsize); if (newsize > oldsize) pagecache_isize_extended(inode, oldsize, newsize); truncate_pagecache(inode, newsize); pagecache_isize_extended() zeroes the tail of the page straddling old EOF. Without it, dirty bytes in that region can be written back to the server, exposing stale data in the newly extended range.

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

lsmod | grep -w cifs

Prints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.
