The vulnerability

What the bug is

UDF 1.50 virtual partition mapping uses the VAT as an array of physical block mappings. s_num_entries stores the number of entries in that array, not the highest valid index. The valid VAT indexes are therefore below s_num_entries. udf_get_pblock_virt15() currently rejects only indexes greater than s_num_entries. A crafted image can request index s_num_entries, pass the bounds check, and make the kernel read one entry past the allocated VAT table. Change the check to reject block >= s_num_entries, so the count is handled as an exclusive upper bound. A crafted UDF image reproduced this on origin/master commit 0e35b9b6ec0ffcc5e23cbdec09f5c622ad532b53 with a KASAN slab-out-of-bounds report in udf_get_pblock_virt15(). Trail of Bits has a reproducer that triggers kernel panic demonstrating the bug, and can share it if needed.

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Check it on the machine

grep -w CONFIG_UDF_FS /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

lsmod | grep -w udf

Prints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.

Show whether Debian builds this, per release

Debian builds this as a loadable module. Every release below compiles it as a module on every flavour, so whether the code is in the running kernel depends on whether that module is loaded.

Why the CNA scored it this way

The kernel CNA published no CVSS vector and no reasoning for CVE-2026-89525, which is why it is shown as unrated rather than given an invented score. 6,405 of the 20,413 CVEs here carry reasoning; this is not one of them.
