drm/vmwgfx: enforce cursor size limits for MOB cursors
Published 2026-08-28 (2 months ago) by the Linux kernel CNA. Subsystem drivers/gpu. Debian urgency: unimportant.
What to do, per Debian release
Debian's own status for CVE-2026-80701 in every release this site tracks, and what each one means in practice. Every status below is the one the Debian Security Team publishes for this CVE. source
| Release | Status | Version | What this means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debian 12bookworm | not affected | 6.1.190-1 | Nothing to do. bookworm never shipped the vulnerable code. |
| Debian 13trixie | not affected | 6.12.113-1 | Nothing to do. trixie never shipped the vulnerable code. |
| Debian 14forky | fixed | 7.1.8-1 | Update the kernel and reboot. Fixed in 7.1.8-1. A running kernel keeps the old code until the machine restarts. |

The vulnerability
What the bug is
vmw_cursor_plane_atomic_check() bounds cursor width and height only on the legacy update path; the SVGA_CAP2_CURSOR_MOB path -- the default on modern hosts -- accepts any size. When the requested size exceeds SVGA_REG_CURSOR_MAX_DIMENSION or SVGA_REG_MOB_MAX_SIZE, vmw_cursor_mob_get() returns -EINVAL and leaves vps->cursor.mob NULL. Its return value is then discarded in vmw_cursor_plane_prepare_fb(), so the subsequent vmw_cursor_update_mob() calls vmw_bo_map_and_cache(NULL) and oopses inside vmw_bo_map_and_cache_size() on the tbo.base.size load. Reachable from any DRM master via DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CURSOR2 with a sufficiently large width or height (e.g. cursor_max_dim + 1). Reject oversized cursors in atomic_check for both MOB-backed cursor update types. The MOB byte-size limit only applies to the SVGA_CAP2_CURSOR_MOB path (vmw_cursor_mob_size() returns 0 for GB_ONLY); compute the required MOB size in 64-bit to avoid overflow when very large dimensions are requested. In prepare_fb only call vmw_cursor_mob_get()/_map() for VMW_CURSOR_UPDATE_MOB -- the GB_ONLY path uses bo->map.virtual directly and would otherwise be silently downgraded to NONE on hosts without SVGA_CAP2_CURSOR_MOB (where vmw_cursor_mob_get() always returns -EINVAL). Degrade the update to NONE if vmw_cursor_mob_get() or vmw_cursor_mob_map() fails so the update path does not run with a NULL backing MOB.
Where it lives
The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Check it on the machine
grep -w CONFIG_DRM_VMWGFX /boot/config-$(uname -r)Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.
lsmod | grep -w vmwgfxPrints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.
Show whether Debian builds this, per release
Debian builds this, but not on every flavour. At least one release below builds the code on some of its kernel flavours and not on others, so the answer depends on the architecture and flavour installed. The build rule could not be established for 2 releases, so nothing is claimed about those.
- bookworm, trixie?
- forky, sidMnot built on amd64/cloud-amd64, arm64/cloud-arm64, armhf/armmp, armhf/armmp-lpae, loong64/loong64, ppc64el/powerpc64le, ppc64el/powerpc64le-64k, riscv64/riscv64, s390x/s390x
- ?
- not established - no Makefile entry for the affected file
- M
- a module where it is built at all; some flavours do not build it
Where a release above reads "not established", no build rule for the affected file was found in that release's kernel tree. That is a gap in this lookup, not a finding that the code is absent.

Why the CNA scored it this way
The kernel CNA published no CVSS vector and no reasoning for CVE-2026-80701, which is why it is shown as unrated rather than given an invented score. 6,405 of the 20,413 CVEs here carry reasoning; this is not one of them.
