accel/amdxdna: reject user command submission without a command BO

EPSS 0.2%

Published 2026-08-15 (2 months ago) by the Linux kernel CNA. Subsystem drivers/accel. Debian urgency: unimportant.

What to do, per Debian release

Debian's own status for CVE-2026-72091 in every release this site tracks, and what each one means in practice. Every status below is the one the Debian Security Team publishes for this CVE. source

The vulnerability

What the bug is

amdxdna_drm_submit_execbuf() passes the user-supplied command BO handle straight into amdxdna_cmd_submit() with drv_cmd == NULL. When the handle is AMDXDNA_INVALID_BO_HANDLE (0), the block that fetches job->cmd_bo is skipped, leaving it NULL, and no check rejects it on the user path (the !job->cmd_bo guard lives inside the != INVALID branch). The job is then armed and pushed to the DRM scheduler. aie2_sched_job_run() takes the drv_cmd == NULL path and calls amdxdna_cmd_set_state(job->cmd_bo) -> amdxdna_gem_vmap(NULL) -> to_gobj(NULL)->dev, a NULL pointer dereference in the drm_sched worker. A process with access to the accel node on a system with a probed AMD NPU can trigger a kernel oops with a single AMDXDNA_EXEC_CMD ioctl (cmd_handles = 0). Only internal driver commands (SYNC_DEBUG_BO / ATTACH_DEBUG_BO) legitimately pass AMDXDNA_INVALID_BO_HANDLE, and they always set drv_cmd. Reject the invalid handle for user submissions (drv_cmd == NULL) at the submit choke point so every user path is covered. Found by 0sec automated security-research tooling (https://0sec.ai).

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Kernel module
amdxdna

Check it on the machine

grep -wE 'CONFIG_DRM_ACCEL|CONFIG_DRM_ACCEL_AMDXDNA' /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

lsmod | grep -w amdxdna

Prints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.

Show whether Debian builds this, per release

Debian builds this, but not on every flavour. At least one release below builds the code on some of its kernel flavours and not on others, so the answer depends on the architecture and flavour installed. The build rule could not be established for 2 releases, so nothing is claimed about those.

Where a release above reads "not established", no build rule for the affected file was found in that release's kernel tree. That is a gap in this lookup, not a finding that the code is absent.

Why the CNA scored it this way

The kernel CNA published no CVSS vector and no reasoning for CVE-2026-72091, which is why it is shown as unrated rather than given an invented score. 6,405 of the 20,413 CVEs here carry reasoning; this is not one of them.
