What to do, per Debian release
Debian's own status for CVE-2026-72028 in every release this site tracks, and what each one means in practice. Every status below is the one the Debian Security Team publishes for this CVE. source
| Release | Status | Version | What this means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debian 12bookworm | vulnerable | 6.1.190-1 | No fix published anywhere yet, neither in Debian nor upstream for the series bookworm tracks. Watch the Debian tracker page for this CVE. Advisories for bookworm have historically landed a median of 23 days after publication. |
| Debian 13trixie | fixed | 6.12.100-1 | Update the kernel and reboot. Fixed in 6.12.100-1. A running kernel keeps the old code until the machine restarts. |
| Debian 14forky | fixed | 7.1.5-1 | Update the kernel and reboot. Fixed in 7.1.5-1. A running kernel keeps the old code until the machine restarts. |
| Debian unstablesid | fixed | 7.1.5-1 | Update the kernel and reboot. Fixed in 7.1.5-1. A running kernel keeps the old code until the machine restarts. |
The vulnerability
What the bug is
Reading a word from the stack in a kretprobe crashes a risc-v kernel. $ cd /sys/kernel/tracing/ $ echo 'r n_tty_write $stack0' > dynamic_events $ echo 1 > events/kprobes/enable Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 0000000200000128 ... [<ffffffff80016d16>] regs_get_kernel_stack_nth+0x26/0x38 [<ffffffff80177196>] process_fetch_insn+0x3ee/0x760 [<ffffffff80177836>] kretprobe_trace_func+0x116/0x1f0 [<ffffffff8017795a>] kretprobe_dispatcher+0x4a/0x58 [<ffffffff8013572e>] kretprobe_rethook_handler+0x5e/0x90 [<ffffffff80180838>] rethook_trampoline_handler+0x70/0x108 [<ffffffff8001ba32>] arch_rethook_trampoline_callback+0x12/0x1c [<ffffffff8001ba84>] arch_rethook_trampoline+0x48/0x94 [<ffffffff8067872a>] tty_write+0x1a/0x30 In regs_get_kernel_stack_nth, regs->sp contains an arbitrary value. arch_rethook_trampoline saves the registers from the probed function in a struct pt_regs. sp is not saved. Instead, sp is decremented for arch_rethook_trampoline's local stack. Fix this crash and save the original sp along with the other registers. Use a0 as a temporary register, it is overwritten anyway. Where it lives
The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Check it on the machine
grep -w CONFIG_RETHOOK /boot/config-$(uname -r)Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.
Show whether Debian builds this, per release
Debian builds this, but not on every flavour. At least one release below builds the code on some of its kernel flavours and not on others, so the answer depends on the architecture and flavour installed. The build rule could not be established for 1 release, so nothing is claimed about those.

- ?
- not established - no Makefile entry for the affected file
- Y
- built in where it is built at all; some flavours do not build it
Where a release above reads "not established", no build rule for the affected file was found in that release's kernel tree. That is a gap in this lookup, not a finding that the code is absent.

From the configuration Debian publishes for every kernel flavour it builds. It covers only the architectures Debian ships a linux-config package for, and nothing about a kernel you built yourself. Why the CNA scored it this way
The kernel CNA published no CVSS vector and no reasoning for CVE-2026-72028, which is why it is shown as unrated rather than given an invented score. 6,405 of the 20,413 CVEs here carry reasoning; this is not one of them.
