The vulnerability

What the bug is

FSCTL_DUPLICATE_EXTENTS_TO_FILE passes the source file directly to vfs_clone_file_range() or vfs_copy_file_range() without checking the SMB access mask granted to the source handle. A handle opened with attribute access can consequently be used to copy file contents into an attacker-readable destination. Require FILE_READ_DATA on the source handle before either VFS operation, matching other ksmbd data-copy paths.

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Check it on the machine

grep -wE 'CONFIG_SMBFS|CONFIG_SMB_SERVER' /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

lsmod | grep -w ksmbd

Prints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.

Show whether Debian builds this, per release

Debian builds this as a loadable module. Every release below compiles it as a module on every flavour, so whether the code is in the running kernel depends on whether that module is loaded.

From the configuration Debian publishes for every kernel flavour it builds. It covers only the architectures Debian ships a linux-config package for, and nothing about a kernel you built yourself. Why the CNA scored it this way

Quoted from the kernel CNA's own scoring file, word for word. A highlighted metric carries the most severe value CVSS v3.1 defines for it, which is what pushes the score up. source

AV:NAttack vector, network
The vulnerable SMB2 IOCTL is remotely reachable through ksmbd over TCP, normally port 445.
AC:LAttack complexity, low
The attacker controls both handles, offsets, and copy length; no race is required, and exploitation is reliable on common reflink-capable filesystems such as XFS and Btrfs.
PR:NPrivileges required, none
In a reasonable guest-enabled writable-share deployment, an unauthenticated remote attacker can establish a guest session without credentials and obtain the required attribute-only source and writable destination handles.
UI:NUser interaction, none
After connecting to the share, the attacker can open both handles and issue the IOCTL without any victim action.
S:UScope, unchanged
The bypass discloses files governed by the same kernel and SMB server security authority and does not cross a virtualization or other security scope.
C:HConfidentiality impact, high
Attacker-controlled offsets and lengths allow complete copying of otherwise unreadable files into an attacker-readable destination, causing total confidentiality loss for protected share contents.
I:NIntegrity impact, none
The source is not modified, and the destination must already be on a writable tree and opened with FILE_WRITE_DATA, so the flaw adds no unauthorized modification capability.
A:NAvailability impact, none
The operation does not corrupt memory, crash the kernel, or inherently disrupt service; any destination writes are already authorized by the required handle permissions.
