The vulnerability
What the bug is
POSIX requires write permission to truncate a file, so an open() that specifies O_TRUNC must be authorized for write access regardless of the O_ACCMODE access mode. nfs_open_permission_mask() builds the access mask passed to nfs_may_open(), which is the local authorization gate for OPENs the client serves itself from a cached write delegation via the can_open_delegated() path in nfs4_try_open_cached(). The mask is derived from O_ACCMODE alone, so an open(O_RDONLY | O_TRUNC) against a file the caller cannot write requests only MAY_READ and passes the local check. The OPEN is then satisfied locally and the truncation is issued to the server as a SETATTR(size=0) over the delegation stateid, which the server accepts under standard write-delegation semantics. POSIX requires that this open fail with EACCES. Include MAY_WRITE in the mask whenever O_TRUNC is set so the local check matches the access the server would have enforced.
Where it lives
The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Check it on the machine
grep -w CONFIG_NFS_FS /boot/config-$(uname -r)Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.
lsmod | grep -w nfsPrints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.
Show whether Debian builds this, per release
Debian builds this as a loadable module. Every release below compiles it as a module on every flavour, so whether the code is in the running kernel depends on whether that module is loaded.

Why the CNA scored it this way
Quoted from the kernel CNA's own scoring file, word for word. A highlighted metric carries the most severe value CVSS v3.1 defines for it, which is what pushes the score up. source
- AV:LAttack vector, local
- An unprivileged local process triggers the flaw through open/openat with O_RDONLY|O_TRUNC on an accessible NFSv4-mounted file. The resulting NFS RPC is outbound and does not make the attack remotely reachable.
- AC:LAttack complexity, low
- Once the client holds a standard cached write delegation, a single deterministic open triggers the unauthorized truncation without a race or timing requirement. Delegations persist and the attacker can repeatedly target files actively written through the same client.
- PR:LPrivileges required, low
- The attacker needs only ordinary local access and read/search permission for the target path; no capability or administrative privilege is required. User namespaces are unnecessary.
- UI:NUser interaction, none
- The attacker invokes open directly and no contemporaneous action by another user is required.
- S:UScope, unchanged
- The faulty client-side permission check and modification of the delegated NFS file remain within the NFS filesystem access-control authority.
- C:NConfidentiality impact, none
- The flaw discloses no kernel or file data beyond content the caller was already authorized to read, and it involves no memory corruption.
- I:HIntegrity impact, high
- The attacker can irreversibly truncate the complete contents of a file for which write access was denied, causing total integrity loss of that resource.
- A:HAvailability impact, high
- Truncating critical NFS-hosted executables, configuration, databases, or operational data can completely disable dependent systems or services, and the attack can be repeated against additional delegated files.
