The root cause should be: in the corrupted inode, there is a direct node which has the same ino and nid in its footer, so in f2fs_do_truncate_blocks(), after f2fs_get_dnode_of_data() finds such dnode: 1) ADDRS_PER_PAGE(dn.node_folio, inode) will return 923 2) once dn.ofs_in_node points to addr[923, 1017] Then it will trigger the system panic. Let's introduce NODE_TYPE_NON_IXNODE to indicate current node should not be an inode or xattr node, and then use it in below path to detect inconsistent node chain in inode mapping table: - f2fs_do_truncate_blocks - f2fs_get_dnode_of_data - f2fs_get_node_folio_ra - __get_node_folio - f2fs_sanity_check_node_footer - case NODE_TYPE_NON_IXNODE -> check whether it is inode|xnode
Where it lives
The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Check it on the machine
grep -w CONFIG_F2FS_FS /boot/config-$(uname -r)Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.
lsmod | grep -w f2fsPrints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.
Show whether Debian builds this, per release
Debian builds this, but not on every flavour. At least one release below builds the code on some of its kernel flavours and not on others, so the answer depends on the architecture and flavour installed.

- CONFIG_F2FS_FS
From the configuration Debian publishes for every kernel flavour it builds. It covers only the architectures Debian ships a linux-config package for, and nothing about a kernel you built yourself. Why the CNA scored it this way
Quoted from the kernel CNA's own scoring file, word for word. A highlighted metric carries the most severe value CVSS v3.1 defines for it, which is what pushes the score up. source
- AV:LAttack vector, local
- The vulnerable F2FS code is reached only through local VFS syscalls (mount, fallocate, unlink/truncate) processing on-disk node metadata; there is no network-facing handler in this path.
- AC:LAttack complexity, low
- Syzkaller reliably triggers this with a crafted F2FS image; the attacker fully controls the corrupted node footer and needs no races or special timing beyond presenting the malformed metadata.
- PR:LPrivileges required, low
- While mounting F2FS requires elevated privileges, the same vulnerable truncate path is reachable from unprivileged local syscalls (fallocate, unlink) on an already-mounted crafted filesystem, matching the CVE-2025-40025 attack class on F2FS-equipped systems like Android phones.
- UI:NUser interaction, none
- Exploitation requires no victim interaction beyond the attacker (or system policy) mounting or accessing the crafted filesystem; no additional user actions are needed to trigger the panic.
- S:UScope, unchanged
- The impact is a kernel panic and filesystem-metadata mishandling within the same kernel security domain; it does not cross VM, container, or IOMMU boundaries.
- C:HConfidentiality impact, high
- Misidentifying a direct node as an inode causes the kernel to use the wrong address layout (i_addr vs dn.addr) when reading block pointers from attacker-controlled node pages, enabling out-of-bounds reads within the node folio that can leak adjacent metadata.
- I:HIntegrity impact, high
- The same node-type confusion can cause truncate operations to write block addresses through the wrong structure layout on cached node pages, corrupting kernel metadata in ways that could be further exploited beyond the immediate crash.
- A:HAvailability impact, high
- The bug triggers f2fs_bug_on() with a negative block count, producing a demonstrated kernel BUG/panic (Oops) in the syzkaller reproducer; even without CONFIG_F2FS_CHECK_FS this causes a WARN and filesystem error handling that degrades availability.
