The vulnerability

What the bug is

MAX_HVC_IUCV_LINES == HVC_ALLOC_TTY_ADAPTERS == 8. This is the number of entries in: static struct hvc_iucv_private *hvc_iucv_table[MAX_HVC_IUCV_LINES]; Sometimes hvc_iucv_table[] is limited by: (a) if (num > hvc_iucv_devices) // for error detection or (b) for (i = 0; i < hvc_iucv_devices; i++) // in 2 places (so these 2 don't agree; second one appears to be correct to me.) hvc_iucv_devices can be 0..8. This is a counter. (c) if (hvc_iucv_devices > MAX_HVC_IUCV_LINES) If hvc_iucv_devices == 8, (a) allows the code to access hvc_iucv_table[8]. Oops.

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Check it on the machine

grep -wE 'CONFIG_HVC_DRIVER|CONFIG_HVC_IUCV' /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

Show whether Debian builds this, per release

Debian does not build this code in 1 release. It does build it in 3 releases, so the answer depends on which release the machine runs.

Why the CNA scored it this way

The kernel CNA published no CVSS vector and no reasoning for CVE-2026-53306, which is why it is shown as unrated rather than given an invented score. 6,405 of the 20,413 CVEs here carry reasoning; this is not one of them.
