The vulnerability
What the bug is
Patch series "ocfs2/dlm: fix two bugs in dlm_match_regions()". In dlm_match_regions(), the qr_numregions field from a DLM_QUERY_REGION network message is used to drive loops over the qr_regions buffer without sufficient validation. This series fixes two issues: - Patch 1 adds a bounds check to reject messages where qr_numregions exceeds O2NM_MAX_REGIONS. The o2net layer only validates message byte length; it does not constrain field values, so a crafted message can set qr_numregions up to 255 and trigger out-of-bounds reads past the 1024-byte qr_regions buffer. - Patch 2 fixes an off-by-one in the local-vs-remote comparison loop, which uses '<=' instead of '<', reading one entry past the valid range even when qr_numregions is within bounds. This patch (of 2): The qr_numregions field from a DLM_QUERY_REGION network message is used directly as loop bounds in dlm_match_regions() without checking against O2NM_MAX_REGIONS. Since qr_regions is sized for at most O2NM_MAX_REGIONS (32) entries, a crafted message with qr_numregions > 32 causes out-of-bounds reads past the qr_regions buffer. Add a bounds check for qr_numregions before entering the loops.
Where it lives
The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Check it on the machine
grep -wE 'CONFIG_OCFS2_FS|CONFIG_OCFS2_FS_O2CB' /boot/config-$(uname -r)Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.
lsmod | grep -w ocfs2_dlmPrints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.
Show whether Debian builds this, per release
Debian builds this, but not on every flavour. At least one release below builds the code on some of its kernel flavours and not on others, so the answer depends on the architecture and flavour installed.
- bookworm, trixie, forky, sidMnot built on amd64/cloud-amd64, arm64/cloud-arm64
- M
- a module where it is built at all; some flavours do not build it
- Build switches
- CONFIG_OCFS2_FS, CONFIG_OCFS2_FS_O2CB
- Reads as
- all on means the file is compiled; any one off means it is not.
From the configuration Debian publishes for every kernel flavour it builds. It covers only the architectures Debian ships a linux-config package for, and nothing about a kernel you built yourself. Why the CNA scored it this way
Quoted from the kernel CNA's own scoring file, word for word. A highlighted metric carries the most severe value CVSS v3.1 defines for it, which is what pushes the score up. source
- AV:NAttack vector, network
- The vulnerable `DLM_QUERY_REGION` message is received over OCFS2 o2net TCP connections from cluster peers, so the code is reachable via network protocol traffic.
- AC:LAttack complexity, low
- A malicious configured/heartbeating peer can create the DLM join state and send a crafted `qr_numregions` value; no race or condition outside the attacker's control is required once the cluster service is exposed.
- PR:NPrivileges required, none
- The receiver performs cluster IP/heartbeat gating but no user authentication or target-local privilege check before dispatching the DLM message, so exploitation does not require an account or privileges on the victim.
- UI:NUser interaction, none
- No victim user action is needed after the OCFS2 cluster/DLM service is running; the attacker sends network messages.
- S:UScope, unchanged
- The impact remains within the kernel/OCFS2 cluster node security authority and does not cross a separate boundary such as guest-to-host or IOMMU isolation.
- C:HConfidentiality impact, high
- The attacker-controlled count drives out-of-bounds reads past the fixed `qr_regions` buffer into adjacent kernel memory; under the higher-severity rule, this is a high confidentiality impact.
- I:NIntegrity impact, none
- The vulnerable loops perform reads and comparisons/logging only, with no out-of-bounds write or demonstrated control-flow/data modification primitive.
- A:HAvailability impact, high
- The crafted message can force kernel out-of-bounds memory reads from the receive buffer path and can reasonably cause an oops/crash or repeated DLM join failure, so availability impact is high.
