The vulnerability

What the bug is

smb_inherit_dacl() walks the parent directory DACL loaded from the security descriptor xattr. It verifies that each ACE contains the fixed SID header before using it, but does not verify that the variable-length SID described by sid.num_subauth is fully contained in the ACE. A malformed inheritable ACE can advertise more subauthorities than are present in the ACE. compare_sids() may then read past the ACE. smb_set_ace() also clamps the copied destination SID, but used the unchecked source SID count to compute the inherited ACE size. That could advance the temporary inherited ACE buffer pointer and nt_size accounting past the allocated buffer. Fix this by validating the parent ACE SID count and SID length before using the SID during inheritance. Compute the inherited ACE size from the copied SID so the size matches the bounded destination SID. Reject the inherited DACL if size accumulation would overflow smb_acl.size or the security descriptor allocation size.

Where it lives

The fix touches these files. If the subsystem is one you do not use, the practical exposure is lower, though the package is still the vulnerable one.

Check it on the machine

grep -wE 'CONFIG_SMBFS|CONFIG_SMB_SERVER' /boot/config-$(uname -r)

Reads the booted kernel's own configuration, on the machine and nowhere else. =y is built in, =m is a module, and an is not set line means the code is not there.

lsmod | grep -w ksmbd

Prints a line if that module is loaded right now, and nothing if it is not. One that is not loaded can still be loaded later by anything that needs it.

Show whether Debian builds this, per release

Debian builds this as a loadable module. Every release below compiles it as a module on every flavour, so whether the code is in the running kernel depends on whether that module is loaded.

Why the CNA scored it this way

Quoted from the kernel CNA's own scoring file, word for word. A highlighted metric carries the most severe value CVSS v3.1 defines for it, which is what pushes the score up. source

AV:NAttack vector, network
The vulnerable code is in ksmbd SMB server ACL inheritance, reached through SMB2 requests over the network.
AC:LAttack complexity, low
An attacker who can write to an ACL-xattr-enabled share can deterministically plant a malformed parent DACL and create a child to trigger inheritance.
PR:LPrivileges required, low
The path is post-authentication and requires a valid SMB session/tree connection with write/create ability on the share.
UI:NUser interaction, none
No victim action is needed after the attacker has SMB access; the attacker sends the SET_INFO/CREATE requests directly.
S:UScope, unchanged
The corruption occurs inside the kernel serving the SMB share and does not cross a separate security authority boundary.
C:HConfidentiality impact, high
The bug includes out-of-bounds reads from kernel heap data, and the inherited security descriptor can expose copied data or support stronger exploitation.
I:HIntegrity impact, high
The unchecked SID length can advance the inherited ACE buffer pointer past its allocation, enabling kernel heap out-of-bounds writes with attacker-influenced ACE data.
A:HAvailability impact, high
The same heap corruption and out-of-bounds access can crash or panic the kernel, causing high availability impact.
